DOING “THE RIGHT THING” –

DOING “THE RIGHT THING”          –

This has been a conversation with my “gals” a lot lately. I was always told that I should do “the right thing”.

The questions that then need to be answered are:

  • What IS “the right thing”?
  • Who is it right for? The other people who are involved? You? Me? People on the outside, looking in?
  • Who benefits and who gets hurt?
  • Does this go along with my morals?
  • Once I have decided what I will do, can I live with myself and be okay with that decision?

Rarely is doing “the right thing” good for everyone involved. And that makes it the wrong thing, one way or another.

The fact is that it is impossible to do “the right thing” for all involved every time. One has to set priorities as to who that “right thing” should be done for. For me, my children come first – what is “the right thing” for my children? That answer changes as the children grow older, mature, and become adults making their own decisions.

Sometimes we have to choose the lesser of two evils when neither is “the right thing”. This decision is always difficult.

As we age and mature, we eventually realize that we need to do “the right thing” for us. Sometimes that means leaving a relationship. Or it can mean setting boundaries with those around us. It can mean changing your routine or environment. It can mean anything that makes your life better.

Life isn’t easy. Making decisions isn’t easy. What it comes down to is doing what is “the right thing” for you because, at the end of the day, YOU are the one who has to look in the mirror and know that you did what was best for you and yours.
