HOW I GET RID OF UPSETTING THOUGHTS –
Lately I have had unsettling, scary, and upsetting thoughts that wouldn’t go away more often than usual.
I found three ways that definitely work for me:
- Go Away! – That’s it. Tell the thought to “Go Away!” With practice, this worked for me. This also works great on earworms (when a song is stuck in your head).
- The Let Them Theory – If you haven’t already read the book, The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins, go get it and read it! It tells you how to Let Them (being other people) have their own thoughts, actions, opinions, etc. and how you don’t have control over their actions so Let Them have them.
- Box On a Shelf – This one can be fun. You imagine putting the thought that is bothering you in a box and putting it on a shelf on your imaginary bookcase. This tricks your mind into removing it from your thoughts, but the mind knows that it can always go back and address it at a later time if it chooses. (A little honesty here – in my thoughts, I have put a person in a large rectangular box then put them on a very high shelf on that imaginary bookcase. Guess what? It worked!)
I have used all 3 at different times. Once I had to go through all 3 to get the thought removed. It worked, though, so I can’t complain.
Whatever works for you, use it. Life is too short to let thoughts ruin your day, night, or even a moment of your time.
